* 18th July, 2023*I haven't been able to visit it myself for maintenance, for a very long time ( I used to run the track regularly! but alas, life...) I was starting to worry the life of the gloworm may be nearing it's end, as the device is meant to have a shelf life of 10 years, which has now well passed ! but from the last finders, it sounds like there is still a Very Faint glimmer left, so I won't archive this yet. *
This is a Night-Cache!
Though I enjoy the challenge of going on bushwalks without a torch, it is advisable for you to bring one! it doesn't need to be overly bright, but make sure the batteries are fresh enough to last the distance & for a safe return. A red or shopping bag makes a good filter/dimmer to spare your night vision
I have not placed reflectors or markers, but have provided a thorough description since satellite reception is typically quite poor among the hillside; just follow the well formed & maintained Ross track, starting at the end of Dundas Rd. However, be aware there Are very steep & slippery places along the sides and a steep flight of stairs, so do pay attention to your footing & the little ones.
Stick to the Track, there is absolutely No need to leave it! There was a small slip with a tree fallen (now partially cleared) over the track at the mine-shaft, so mind your head & the mud You'll probably want to duck anyway, to investigate the mineshafts. Past the mine, keep going uphill (do not take the side-track!) Take your time to stop & rest at the landings on the long stairway & shut your lights off to fully enjoy the scenery! These are also fun spots to check out the waterfall & the pools when you turn your lights back on. Who knows what you might see? Continue on up the stairway & beyond... Quietly sneak past 4 trolls.... Turn your lights off & wait Patiently in total darkness to let your eyes adjust and you will spy a special glo-worm which is guarding the cache.
Please re-hide cache where found & out of sight. Thanks! Have fun! You can read more about NZ glow-worms here --> Te Ara
