Geocache Description:

Located at the Blokhouse on the foot hills of Platberg Mountain. Free entry if you go by foot. Fee levied if you enter by car. Easy terrain, but a walk through the veld when you have to turn off the road, so put on the right shoes. Great view. Take a writing tool.

This is not a difficult cache but requires a 15 minute stroll to the location from the main gate. You can park your car outside to start your walk, there is a friendly guard at the gate who can keep an eye. This is a nice walk if you prefer so and worth it once you reach the Blokhouse. Walk straight down the gravel road towards the Blokhouse and turn to your left into the veld before you reach the tall trees at the bottom of the hill. Cross the little stream and go up the hill.

This blockhouse formed part of the 8000 that was erected to catch the boers in the anglo boer war. The blockhouses stretched from Heilbron past Frankfort to Memel and back to Harrismith. From Harrismith to Bethlehem there were 134 Blockhouses. It was declared a national monument in 1938 and erected in 1901 by Captain Hawkins and stand up to this day vigil over the town’s water supply.
