The term Nueces Canyon is used to encompass the small communities of Vance, Barksdale, Montell, and the City of Camp Wood, all of which rest along the crystal clear waters of the Nueces River which begins just north of Barksdale and ends in the Gulf of Mexico.
Where it begins is a natural canyon of sorts, rich in American, Indian, and Mexican history. This is where the term Nueces Canyon originates. Nueces is an Indian term that translates as "nut", so called because the Nueces River has numerous Pecan trees along its bank.
