This cache is located at a P. W. Richards force pump, made in South Australia and once used to supply water to the market gardens in the area.
The Torrens River was the first water source for Adelaide. At the end of the Torrens Valley, the stone weir was the start of a system to provide Adelaide’s first clean articulated water supply. Although Athelstone is better known for the Italians who settled here after WWII, the area has been farmed since the 1860s. When we were looking for our first cache, using a wildly inaccurate phone GPS, we decided this was the perfect location for a cache. There wasn’t one then, there is now. If you are feeling 'under the pump', this is a good place to walk the dog, play ball with the kids or just sit and relax for a while. We never did find that other cache... The cache is now a bison tube, so you will need to bring your own pen.
