Geocache Description:

Moderate stroll across an open field with some pavement along the way. Ground secure enough site should be handicap accessible. No bushwacking here but a sharp eye will be helpful. No tools required. Make sure lid is on snug to keep water out. Container large enough for small Travel Bugs or other Trackables. Best to BYOP.  Permission granted for this cache placement.

CAUTION:This should be a fun and easy cache for both children and adults but be aware that the nearby marsh is home to dangerous slithering reptiles and eight-legged predatory arachnid creatures who at times may want to inspect or guard container. Reaching where you cannot see is seldom a good idea.

An 1800 era windmill was erected near here back in
the 1970s giving this place its name. The working structure
remained on site until 2010 when it was moved across the sound
to Roanoke Island where it stands today.

Great place take a walk with your family across an open field to a container large enough for Travel Bugs and other Trackables. Make sure you have applied sufficient amounts of mosquito repellent before leaving your vehicle. Several parking options available just off US 158 or at the posted coordinates in the parking lot of a nearby miniature golf and an ice cream shop where the manager has given permission to park. No pen at the cache so BYOP. Cache container secured to avoid it washing away which could happen here so please make sure everything is back in place. Original container was destroyed so a replacement has been created and put in place.

Back in the 1970s a windmill much like those once common on North Carolina’s Outer Banks was erected near here giving this place its name. The 1800s era German post-type structure remained on site until 2010 when it was moved across the sound to Roanoke Island where it stands today.

Also nearby was the site of Windmill Point Restaurant which featured various treasures from the SS UNITED STATES such as the ship’s bell and Captain’s table. After some 30 years as a fixture on the Nags Head soundfront the then abandoned, decrepit and unwanted old restaurant building was burned down during a fire training exercise in 2011.

The town of Nags Head and the Outer Banks Tourism Board are currently conducting research to determine the best use for this property. The primary goal here is to increase visitation to the Outer Banks with events already taking place and more are being planned. So be prepared to stop by for a search and be greeted by several thousand Muggles attending an outdoor event. That would NOT be the time to hunt for this geocache. Time will tell how long this one can stay. FtF honors go to NY-NC-Bob. Permission was granted for this cache placement.
