HISTORY OF MARBLES
Marbles originated in various ancient civilisations and were made of marble (hence the name), clay, stone or glass.
Various games can be played with marbles. One popular school yard game involved drawing a circle on the ground and players took it in turns to knock other players' marbles out of the circle with their own marble.
I remember my dad recounting stories of his primary school days in Adelaide in the 1930’s, and how boys used to scale the school fence to get into the glass bottle factory next door, many in bare feet, to break the bottles to get the marbles.
In 1872, British soft drink maker Hiram Codd, designed a glass bottle specifically for carbonated drinks. The neck of the bottle enclosed a marble and a rubber washer/gasket. The bottles were filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. It is believed by some that the term codswallop originates from beer sold in Codd bottles.
