Geocache Description:

A small click and lock cache which is an easy find if you can avoid being seen. GZ is overlooked and is in a busy tourist / walker / pub customer area, (hence the 2.5 for difficulty).

The Cache is laid in celebration of my granddaughter Lulu's second birthday, and the 4th in the Hill/Vernon Genealogy Link series.

On her father's side Lulu is a descendant of the Vernons and the Hills who are documented as having lived and worked in the High Peak for over 350 years . An immediate forbear, Alan Hill, is yet another member of her family who has worked for a Duke of Devonshire as an innkeeper, he is Chef Patron of the two Devonshire owned pubs on the Chatsworth Estate, here at Beeley and at Pilsley.

At one time there were 3 inns in this small village, now there is only one remaining in Beeley. Originally the premises now occupied by the pub were built as three separate cottages in 1726. Within 20 years these were converted into an inn which served the travellers on the coaches from London. You can still see the stables where the horses would be rested in the car park of the pub.

Among these travellers was the writer Charles Dickens who was a frequent visitor here. It is also rumoured that King Edward VII often met his mistress Alice Keppel in the Beeley public house.

Beeley parish register records that on Thursday 11th July 1872, there was a tremendous thunderstorm at 3.30 in the afternoon. At Beeley the brook flowing in front of the Inn was so swollen that the road was impassable. On Sunday 31st August 1997 at 3.30pm, history repeated itself and the height of the flood water is marked on the beam in the bar.

See the other two caches associated with Lulu's forbears who were innkeepers for the Duke of Devonshire. At Sparrowpit, ‘I Want to be Wanted’ (GC26F32), placed in celebration of Lulu’s birth. and at Peak Forest, 'I'm Getting Married in the Morning' (GC2VEH2) placed in celebration of Lulu's 1st birthday.
