Pine tree identification - Do you know anyone who refers to all evergreen trees, such as firs, cedars and hemlocks. as a pine trees? This cache will take you to true pine trees, not commonly found in this area.
Pine tree needles are the only evergreen needles found in bundles, ranging from 2 to 5 per bundle depending on the species.
As you walk, compare these needle bundles to the needles on the other evergreen trees you will be passing. You will see that other types of evergreens have needles that are each individually attached to the stem. Cedar trees are an exception with their scale-like leaves.
While placing this cache, I heard a Barred Owl. Their usual call is a series of eight accented hoots ending in oo-aw, with a downward pitch at the end. The most common mnemonic device for remembering the call is "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all."
I hope you hear it calling as you walk the trail.
