Geocache Description:

Saint Adalbert Hill is the site of one of Poznań's oldest settlements. It is presumed to have maintained links with the Ducal residence on Cathedral Island even more than a millennium ago. This high vantage point overlooking the Warta was probably selected for its strategic benefits and used to erect fortifications designed to defend the main settlement.

Saint Adalbert is said to have made a stopover there in 997 to celebrate holy mass while on a mission to Prussia. Prince Bolesław the Wry-Mouthed, who popularized the worship of the Bishop, is believed to have erected the Romanesque Church of Saint Adalbert on the Hill in the 12th century.
Up until 1244, the settlement was owned by the Prince, later to be acquired by bishops and made administratively independent of Poznań authorities and its judiciary.
The Saint Adalbert Hill settlement prospered thanks to the major commercial route to Pomerania which passed through it and the neighboring Wierzbak River on which mills were built as long ago as the Middle Ages. Two of them, the mills of Podgórnik and Przepadek, were located in the immediate surronudings.
In the 16th century, Saint Adalbert Hill harbored Bohemian Brethren and Lutherans who were forced to set their temples outside of the Catholic Poznań. Their buildings were eventually destroyed during the Counter-Reformation. In 1618, the Hill saw the arrival of the Barefoot Carmelites who erected a church and a monastery.
After the Swedish invasion, the area lost its significance, devastated by a number of successive sieges of Poznań. It retained its single-story rural architecture until the 19th century. The settlement was administratively merged with Poznań in 1797.
Much of the south-northern slopes were used as gardens by the Carmelite Order. After the city fell under Prussian rule and the Order was closed in 1801, the slopes were turned into military training grounds. A small complex of storage buildings and barracks was erected soon afterwards.
The northern slopes of Saint Adalbert Hill were significantly transformed in the 19th century. An old parish cemetery (today's Cemetery of Eminent Wielkopolska Residents) was established there in 1808. During the construction of the Poznań Stronghold, Saint Adalbert Fort (Fort Hake) was placed at the site, mainly to protect a weir on the Wierzbak River. The Fort was demolished in the early 20th century opening up space for the construction of streets. It originally extended from today's streets of Księcia Józefa to Na Podgórniku.
The Saint Adalbert Hill buildings were destroyed in 1945 during the heavy liberation fighting in the nearby Citadel. They were partially reconstructed after the War.
On the hill there are two churches: . SAIN ADALBERT CHURCH WITH THE CRYPT OF EMINENT WIELKOPOLSKA PESIDENTS and
SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH AND THE BAREFOOT CARMELITE MONASTERY.
