In a field at the top of a hill just outside Henley there are some mature trees planted in the shape of the Victoria Cross. Apparently there were originally 60 trees and one theory is that they were planted to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
You can find out more information at www.chilternsaonb.org/ccbmaps/585/137/henley-cross.html and in a book called 'Special Trees and Woods of the Chilterns', which is available from Oxfordshire libraries.
It is very difficult to appreciate the formation at ground level, but you can see it clearly in aerial photos.
We recommend that you park in Fair Mile (A4130) in Henley and head up the hill past the Badgemore's Box cache. The Oxfordshire Way footpath takes you straight through the middle of the cross! At the gates at either end of the field there are signs stating that it is private property, and requesting that you keep to the footpath (and keep dogs on leads). For this reason we have placed the cache just outside the field, very close to the gate at the far end.
The walk to the cache and back should take about 45-55 minutes. It's a lovely walk with great views.
At the time of placing, there were some wooden armchairs hewn from tree trunks close to the gate - a great spot for a breather.
You are looking for a micro (a bit smaller than a 35mm film container). Please bring your own pen. Please tuck the cache away so it's not too visible.
