James B. Francis är en av industrialismens många uppfinnargenier. År 1848, i Lowell, Massachusetts, förbättrade han den tidens turbinkonstruktioner och uppfann den s k Francisturbinen. Vetenskapliga principer och testmetoder banade väg för en mycket effektiv turbinkonstruktion med en verkningsgrad på upp till 90%. Francis analytiska metoder gjorde det möjligt att exakt matcha turbinerna till det aktuella vattenflödet.
Francisturbinen är en reaktionsturbin. Vattnets tryck minskar på dess väg genom turbinen och energin överförs till löphjulet. Hjulet fås att rotera genom att leda in vattnet från ett spiralformat intag och genom ställbara ledskovlar. Än idag är Francisturbinen den vanligaste typen av vattenturbin. Den är emellertid som effektivast vid fallhöjder över 20-100 meter, så sådana här små vattenkraftverk är numera oftast utrustade med andra turbintyper.

James B. Francis is one of the many inventor geniuses of the industrial age. In 1848, in the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, he improved existing turbine designs and invented the Francis turbine. Scientific principles and testing methods produced a very effective turbine design with up to 90% efficiency. Francis' analytical methods made it possible to exactly match turbines to a specific water flow.
The Francis turbine is a reaction turbine. The water pressure changes on its way through the turbine and the energy is transfered to the turbine wheel. The wheel is made to rotate by leading water into a spiral shaped inlet and through adjustable guide vanes. Francis turbines are still the most widely used turbines. They are however most effective at head ranges from 20-100 meters, so small stations like this one are nowadays usually equipped with other types of turbines.
