Along Kinston's beautiful waterfront path and within site of Murney Tower, it can be high in muggle traffic so do be stealthy. Bring your own writing utensil, as it is a micro cache.
Murney tower is a National Historic Site of Canada, as of 1930. The construction of the limestone tower was during the Oregon crisis (Canadian-American boundary dispute on the West coast) in 1846 and was originally named Murray Tower. The name was changed due to the locals calling it Murney Tower, as it was located on the Murney family property.
The purpose of these four towers, is that they worked with Fort Henry (along with Cathcart Tower [1848], Shoal Tower [1847] and Fort Frederick [ 1846]) to protect Kingston and the Rideau Canal strategically. When you go near it, it is obvious that the dry ditch is impressive and would ward off intruders, along with the guns and cannons pointed out of the windows. Martello towers do not typically have roofs in other areas of the world, but in Canada we get snow, so these towers have a rapid removal roof.
These towers never saw any action, but was used as barracks for military officers. Two of the towers now house interesting museums (Murney Tower and Fort Frederick) during the summer time with mid 19th century military artifacts on display.
