A slightly disguised micro cache, (pen required) hidden near the site of the former Helston train station. It may be a bit of a scramble to get to this but the routes are quite clear when you get near. The cache is not on the side of the wall where the Helston Rifle Club building is and I would not suggest parking there and walking that way either, where's the fun in that? Please replace it well hidden again and be careful on the slopes!!
I would not claim to be an expert on the subject of the Helston Branch Line but my interest was aroused by the excellent caches set along it's route by Furry Pasty Munchers, The Defender and maybe more.
When we first moved here and walked passed this site it looked to us that there was a bridge once to continue the line from here but we now know that was not the case, although it was originally intended to continue all the way to the Lizard. In some ways that was a good thing as it gave Helston a claim to fame in that it had the first railway owned bus service to connect Helston to The Lizard.
There is lots of evidence of the former station, platform and trackbed here as I'm sure is obvious as well as some buildings associated with it. The building that is now a retirement home was the goods shed and the GWR logo is still visible on the front. The rifle club building stands where the coach shed used to be and is of very similar dimensions. The cache site is on the raised bank that was intended to bridge over the road and carry on down to The Lizard but due to financial constraints never happened. Lots more can be found out by visiting the local museum in Helston and also by continuing along the former line and picking up the other caches!
Any further info or any historical photos would be a great addition to any logs and thanks to Phil from the Furry Pasty Munchers for providing me with lots of information about this area and also for his caches along the line!
Happy Caching!
