Geocache Description:

Cache is a standard lock&lock along the Grand River trail. Do not remove the "evidence" from the cache. You must sign the log.

The Last Duel is a piece of forgotten Haldimand lore.

The story of the last duel in Canada goes:
John Norton was a Mohawk Chief who fought in the War of 1812 (playing a role in battles like Detroit and Queenston Heights). He's famous enough that he has a wikipedia page (visit link)

After the War of 1812 Norton married a girl named Catherine Munn and lived in a place called the Hillhouse near what is now Sims Lock (not far from this cache). In 1823 Catherine complained to John that another man was making advances toward her. The man, Joseph Big Arrow, was a friend of Norton and told to leave but did not. Instead he came to the Hillhouse and challenged Norton to a duel. They chose weapons and got ready, spectators watching nearby.

They both shot at each other. Norton's bullet hit Joesph's thigh and Joesph's bullet just grazed the top of Norton's head. Big Arrow died two days later and Norton was charged with murder. Norton was only given a $25 fine thanks to witness testimony.

After the trial John Norton moved to Cherokee country, not wanting to see his wife again. Catherine died in 1827. The farm was later sold off and the Hillhouse burned down. Its said that the farm managers house is all that remains of the site.

If you are ever in Cayuga have a look for Norton Street, which is supposedly named after John Norton. Other accounts can be found online, including the one linked in the "Related Web Page"

Cache is a green lock and lock container. Remember that you must sign the log. Make sure you replace everything as you found it. I left a pencil, a trackable and a toonie for the FTF.
