Geocache Description:

Captain James Cook, Royal Navy 1728 - 1779

A fine seaman, an outstanding Captain and an honest man. Captain Cook was one of the last of the great explorer-navigators and the first of the scientific expedition leaders.

Captain James Cook:

After 3 global voyages of 1768-71, 1772-75 and 1776-79, the map of the world was substantially complete.

Here on the 9th and 10th of October 1769, Cook walked with men from HM Bark Endeavour seeking fresh food and water. Nearby on the river rock Toka-a-Taiau Maori chief and English captain greeted one another. When traditional challenges were misunderstood, Maori were killed, the ship sailed with provisions and thus Poverty bay received it's name.

From here the Endeavour circumnavigated New Zealand and Cook plotted the first map of this Country.

This meeting of the two peoples marked the beginning of the New Zealand nation.

The Cache:

Not your regular cache container, think urban cache. Extremely well camouflaged. Larger than a Micro but much smaller than a Standard. Can only contain its log book so you will need to bring your own pen. With it's small log, it would be helpful and appreciated if you note in your online log if it is getting too full. Please replace the cache in exactly the same position thank you.

To find the Cache:

Stand on the North East compass marker and walk approximately 125 steps in a North East direction.

The Terrain Rating:

The location is near a busy road so young children will need to be supervised.

First to Find honours awarded to: Shellnz & Mr Chillipips.
