Geocache Description:

The cache certainly lives up to its name " it is over 1 down".
It is our 1st geo-caching anniversary so 1 down, n to go! and is not too far from home.

The church of St Stephen Newport serves the villages of Newport and Gilberdyke but is in neither! It sits in the hamlet of Scalby. The building dates from 1897 - 1899 built of local yellow brick and is quite a nice example of late Victorian church building. Costing £7000 to build through the generosity of the Whitaker family of Everthorpe Hall, now better known as the home of HMP Everthorpe. The village of Newport was famous for manufacturing yellow bricks during the last century. Brickworks/brickyards were numerous in the locality over the last 250 years.
