This is a steep walk through woodland overlooking a loop in the River Wenning. You can park over the road in the village car park (with honesty box) and you take the footpath on the left side of the village hall through the farmyard.
From this vantage point you can look across the valley on to Caton Moors and back to the pretty village of Wray. But dominating the scene in a loop of the river is Hornby Castle. This is privately owned and occasionally the gardens are open to the public.
It has an early foundation - possibly it was Norman keep - but the structure you see today is largely the work of Sharpe and Paley, and Paley and Austin, their successors, who renovated it in the last half of the 19th century. The usual view of the Castle from the Wenning Bridge across the weir in Hornby is dramatic but from this angle, you can see how it is surrounded on 3 sides by the river. From here you can also appreciate the full extent of the castle, including the little polygonal 16th century tower, which is the highest point of the building.
Congratulations to Quietly Crew for FTF!
