S. Gregorioita La chiesetta di San Gregorio a Olgiate Olona, benedetta nel 1668, venne realizzata per volontà del conte Giuseppe Besozzi, il quale donò alcune sue proprietà al fine di costruire un oratorio in ricordo della peste del 1630 e dei suoi morti. La terribile pestilenza aveva, infatti, ridotto la popolazione a poche centinaia di persone: all'oratorio, dedicato a San Gregorio Magno, venne aggiunto l'appellativo "del Lazzaretto" perché nelle vicinanze si trovavano il lazzaretto e il cimitero in cui furono sepolti gli appestati.
È importante ricordare che San Gregorio riordinò liturgicamente e diede impulso al culto dei morti che è da sempre invocato contro la peste, ed a lui furono intitolati diversi lazzaretti come quello della vicina Busto Arsizio.
San Gregorio Magno del Lazzaretto ha conosciuto diversi interventi di restauro nel corso della sua storia, il primo dei quali pochi decenni dopo la fondazione. Dal 2008 fino a metà 2011 si è svolto un restauro anche sugli esterni dell'oratorio, che è stato totalmente disintonacato e rifatto con un rivestimento di malta di calce.

STORIA DELLA CHIESETTA
L'edificio presenta una struttura architettonica semplice, con una facciata incorniciata da due lesene e timpano semicircolare; il portone centrale immette in un vestibolo, il quale precede l'ambiente sacro ad aula unica.
La chiesetta conserva al suo interno quattro statue lignee: lungo le pareti della navata, in due nicchie, trovano posto S. Antonio Abate (che tiene in mano fiamme di fuoco) e S. Domenico; collocate ai fianchi dell'arco, che introduce alla zona dell'altare, la statua di San Gregorio Magno (in vesti papali) e quella della Madonna Addolorata. Le prime tre sono opera dell'olgiatese Stefano Palma (fine 1800), mentre l'Addolorata appartiene all'artigianato della Val Gardena. Questa Madonna (copia dell'originale andato perduto) è da sempre venerata dalla popolazione soprattutto nei momenti particolarmente difficili e dolorosi: nel 1884, l'oratorio ospitò i malati di colera e l'Addolorata venne molto invocata per liberare gli abitanti dalla malattia che imperversava ad Olgiate.
Prima dell'altare, a destra, troviamo l'affresco con Sant'Ambrogio eseguito da Biagio Bellotti (1714-1789).
Dietro l'altare trova posto l'opera più preziosa di questa chiesa: si tratta della grande tela con San Gregorio Magno e le anime purganti. Realizzata negli stessi anni in cui venne benedetto l'oratorio, è riconducibile alla mano di un pittore appartenente alla scuola di Paolo Pagani.
La presenza documentata del Bellotti ad Olgiate e le analogie formali con S. Michele a Busto Arsizio (opera appunto del Bellotti) ci consentono di formulare l'ipotesi che il protiro della chiesa cimiteriale di San Gregorio ad Olgiate Olona non fosse un porticato aperto, ma un 'mortorio' suddiviso in tre spazi: quello centrale, aperto verso l'esterno, era l'accesso alla chiesa, i due laterali erano destinati all'esposizione delle ossa.
Questa ipotesi è avvalorata dalla presenza degli ossari a pozzo, e ancora dalla volta tripartita, con i due archi centrali che probabilmente erano in corrispondenza alle due pareti divisorie interne, poi demolite; le finestre erano certamente le due ovali che sono state individuate in occasione dei recenti restauri; altre due finestre erano forse aperte nelle pareti divisorie scomparse; la porta di ingresso alla chiesa era, con ogni probabilità, quella dal profilo tipicamente bellottiano, che oggi separa l'atrio dall'aula principale; altrimenti non si spiegherebbe la sua forma.
Non deve stupire il fatto che per entrare in chiesa i fedeli dovessero passare attraverso l'esposizione delle ossa, se si pensa che si giungeva all'ingresso solo dopo avere attraversato tutto il cimitero; e questo non avveniva solo nelle cappelle cimiteriali, ma in tutte le chiese del tempo.
Se questa ipotesi risultasse corretta, si tratterebbe di una soluzione originalissima, che non ha riscontro in altri episodi architettonici, un ulteriore inedito colpo di genio del Bellotti.
Sempre per analogia con il 'mortorio' di San Michele a Busto Arsizio e possibile ipotizzare che, anche a Olgiate, l'interno sia stato affrescato dallo stesso Bellotti.

CURIOSITA’: COS’E’ UN MORTORIO?
I 'mortori' erano cappelle che, mediante l'esposizione delle ossa dei defunti, avevano la funzione di indurre nei passanti pie meditazioni sul mistero della morte.
Si trovavano nelle chiese parrocchiali - che allora erano tutte circondate dal cimitero - e, a maggior ragione, nelle chiese cimiteriali.
La tipologia più frequente era quella di un vano ricavato nelle murature d'ambito della chiesa o di un'edicola di piccole dimensioni, con una finestra - spesso ornata, e nel '700 con il caratteristico profilo mistilineo - che consentiva la visione delle ossa esposte all'interno.

VITA e CURIOSITA’ DI SAN GREGORIO MAGNO
Gregorio Magno, papa e dottore della chiesa, è patrono dei sapienti per la sua vasta cultura e dei musicisti per il canto gregoriano. L'attributo principale di San Gregorio è la colomba dello Spirito Santo, insieme alla tiara, alla stola, alla croce papale, alle chiavi pontificie.
Nacque a Roma nel 540 e trasformò la sua casa sul Monte Celio in monastero. Qui visse anni felici dedicandosi alla preghiera ed allo studio dei testi sacri.
Funzionario e segretario di Pelagio II, nel 590 diventò papa.
A quell'epoca Roma era devastata dalla peste: Gregorio indisse una processione solenne verso Santa Maria Maggiore dove tenne Ia sua prima predica. Si narra che nel tragitto gli apparve l'arcangelo San Michele che fece cessare l'epidemia.
Morì nel 604.
A questo papa si deve la codificazione delle liturgie e l'affermazione del rito latino sugli altri riti regionali sorti spontaneamente nei primi secoli della Chiesa, oltre al riordino e all'impulso dato al canto liturgico (gregoriano), che da lui prese il nome.

eng The church of San Gregorio in Olgiate Olona, consecrated in 1668, was made by the will of Count Giuseppe Besozzi, who donated some of its properties in order to build a chapel in memory of the plague of 1630 and its deads. The terrible plague, in fact, had reduced the population to a few hundred people: at the oratory dedicated to St. Gregory Magno, was added the name "Lazzaretto" because they were near the hospital and the cemetery where were buried the plague.
It is important to remember that St. Gregory reorganized liturgically and gave impetus to the cult of the dead. Maybe for this reason St. Gregory is always invoked against the plague.
Lazzaretto of San Gregorio Magno has undergone several restorations during its history, the first of them, only few decades after its founding. From 2008 until mid-2011 was also carried out restoration work on the exterior of the oratory, which was totally rebuilt.

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
The building has a simple architecture with a facade framed by two pilasters and a semicircular pediment, the central door leads into a vestibule, which precedes the sacred environment for single room.
Inside the church you can see four wooden statues: the walls of the nave, in two niches, are placed S. Antonio Abate (who holds a flame of fire) and S. Dominic placed to the sides of the arch, leading into the area of the altar, the statue of St. Gregory the Great (in papal vestments) and that of Our Lady of Sorrows. The first three had been made by Stefano Palma (late 1800).
Before the altar, to the right, we can see the picture of St. Ambrose by Biagio Bellotti (1714-1789).
Behind the altar is placed the most precious work of this church: a large painting of St. Gregory the Great and the souls in purgatory. Made in the same year in which the chapel was blessed, is due to the hand of a painter belonging to the school of Paolo Pagani.
The documented presence of Bellotti in Olgiate and formal similarities with S. Michael Busto Arsizio (works precisely by Bellotti) allow us to formulate the hypothesis that the porch of the church cemetery of St. Gregory in Olgiate Olona was not an open porch, but a 'mortorio' divided into three areas: the central, open to the outside, had access to the church, the two sides were destined to exposure of the bones.
This hypothesis is supported by the presence of the ossuaries and the tripartite with the two central arches that were probably in the two interior walls, then demolished; windows were certainly the two ovals that have been identified during the recent restorations were perhaps two other windows open in the partition walls disappeared, and the entrance door to the church was, in all likelihood, the profile similar o works made by Bellotti, which today separates the main hall from the classroom, otherwise one could not explain its shape.
It is not surprising that to enter the church people had to pass through the exhibition of the bones.
If this hypothesis proves correct, it would be a very original solution, which has no counterpart in other architectural episodes, another unusual stroke of genius by Bellotti.
By  analogy with the ‘mortorio’ of San Michele in Busto Arsizio we can hypothesize that even in Olgiate, the interior has been painted by the same Bellotti.

CURIOSITY: WHAT'S A ‘MORTORIO’?
The 'mortorio' were chapels that had the function to induce passers in pious meditation on the mystery of death by exposing the bones of the deceased.
They were in the parish churches, all of which were then surrounded by the cemetery.

LIFE AND CURIOSITY OF ST GREGORY THE GREAT
Gregory the Great, pope and doctor of the church, is patron of the learned for his vast knowledge and musicians in Gregorian chant. The main attribute of San Gregorio is the dove of the Holy Spirit, with the tiara, the stole, the papal cross, the papal keys.
He was born in Rome in 540 and converted his home into a monastery on Monte Celio. Here lived the happy years devoting himself to prayer and the study of sacred texts.
Previously officer and Secretary of Pelagius II, he became pope in 590.
At that time Rome was devastated by the plague: Gregory held a solemn procession to Santa Maria Maggiore where he did his first sermon. On the route appeared the archangel St. Michael, which put an end to the epidemic.
He died in 604.
