Geocache Description:

This Geocache has been placed here to commemorate the official opening of the Worlds First National Coastal Path on the 5th May 2012 to be known as the ‘All-Wales Coastal Path’.

All-Wales Coastal Path– Llantwit Major Section Number 1
Inaugural Day 5th May 2012

The 5th May 2012, will be the official opening of the Worlds First National Coastal Path. This is the day this Geocache has been placed and gone ‘live’ to commemorate the occasion.

The All-Wales Coastal Path incorporates established coastal footpaths and in 2006 an initiative was born to link all the paths together (this section is the Heritage Coastal Path). Over a 4 year period substantial work has been done to create new footpaths that enable the network of existing paths to be joined together. When complete the path will be 870 miles (1,400 kms) long and will join up with Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail to provide a total of 1,030 miles of walking opportunities all around the Welsh border. The sheer size and brilliance of the path has already received public recognition with the All-Wales Coastal Path being acknowledged as the world’s top destination to visit in 2012 by lonely Planet, the travel guide experts.

The new and existing footpaths will be rebranded as the All-Wales Coastal Path (AWCP). The total cost has been in excess of £10 million with funding coming from the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund. The AWCP will ensure improved access to the coast line thus encouraging people to live more healthy and active lifestyles. The path is expected to boost tourism and economic activity within coastal locations around Wales.

The cache is a 22oz sealable plastic box and a camouflaged bag has been made for it. Initially, the box was full of trading items and a ‘Travel Bug’ (Dr Who K9). Please ensure the cache is carefully hidden from view. Parking is available at the beach (Llantwit Major) and it is a ½ mile walk from parking to the cache. The path is not suitable for disabled people or pushchairs.

Hopefully, more Geocaches will be placed along the route and be branded as the All-Wales Coastal Path – (location and number). Those visiting this area for the first time please try and spend sometime looking around the lovely historic town of Llantwit Major.

Happy Geocaching
