Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed at a south Moorhead business, with permission. You will not need to go inside the building.

Did you know Minnesota was the first state to have an official state mushroom? We did not, but if you think about it it makes perfect sense. We are not saying the folks down in St. Paul were thinking about cream of mushroom soup back in 1984 when they made the morel the state mushroom, but maybe they were.

Call it Hotdish or Casserole (which I just found out is from the French word for ‘saucepan’) Minnesota is known for them. In fact, we betcha all you nice Minnesota cachers and those from the surrounding states have more than a few church cookbooks in the family and are they full of hotdish recipes? Uff-da, you know they are.

As I am writing this it is getting on toward supper, don’t ya know. All this hotdish talk was got me thinking it would be fun if folks posted one of those family hotdish recipes. It does not have to have cream of mushroom soup in it, but bonus points for those that have it.

Chow Mein Hotdish

1 lb. hamburger______ 1 cup instant rice
1 onion ____________ 1 can cream of mushroom soup
4Tbsp soy sauce_____ 1 can chicken w/ rice soup
1 cup chopped celery__ 2 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce
2 cups water________ chow mein noodles, held back until the end

Fry hamburger and onion together. Mix all other ingredients (except noodles) in a casserole, stirring well to separate the mushroom soup.
Add hamburger and onion.
Bake 1½ hrs at 350°.
Add chow mein noodles to the top of the hotdish for the last 20 minutes.
