Find out how big our solar system really is as you complete this cache series. In this model the sun is represented by a large sculpture of a hand holding a zia symbol at Luz de Amistad Park near the corner of Tramway and Central. This Zia, a symbol for the sun, is about four meters in diameter. The distances of each planet to the sun and the diameter of each planet is to scale relative to the sun.
Mercury, the closest planet to the sun is located about 160 meters from the sun in this scale model. Mercury is the smallest of the eight planets, measuring only 13 millimeters diameter. Pull the string on top the cache to open the container. Be careful of wind. The container, log, and lid are all very light and this can be a windy spot.
Fun Facts:
The speed of light in this model is only about three feet per second. So be sure to take a leisurely stroll to the cache.
The sun shines ten times brighter on Mercury than it does on earth. The temperature on Mercury reaches 800 F during the day and -280 F at night.
Congratulations to Team TJ for FTF!
