Geocache Description:

Naupaka, a beautiful Hawaiian legend of Love.

The Naupaka is a distinct green colored bush that bares one half of the flower blossom called the Naupaka Kahakai (or Beach Naupaka) and the other half is located in the Mountains, called the Naupaka Kuahiwi (or Mountain Naupaka). There are many legends of the Naupaka and we found one to be the most fitting. Princess Naupaka was the daughter of a Chief that fell in love with a commoner named Kau'i. Because of the class difference a marriage would not be permissable. The couple so sadden by the news went to seek the help of a Kahuna (Preist) and the Kahuna told the young couple that it was up for the Gods to decide. After praying to the Gods the sky darkened the winds rose and the rains thundered and lightning filled the sky. The couple were so sadden by the result that the Princess took the flower blossom from her hair and broke it in half giving one half to Kau'i. She stayed by the beach while he disappered into the Mountains. Today, when we see these blossoms around the shoreline or deep in the Mountains we are reminded of this young couples forbidden love.
