Just A Cache in Salter Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RayQix: KacheHuntR, PaRaDiZ and I were over visiting the East Side today and this one was one that we checked since "Papa Patrick" (Team Top Kat) had mentioned that it may be missing due to the recent tree-trimming that appears to have taken-place here.

Well.... the one thought was maybe, just maybe, i could replace something here.... since the intent was to have Salter have one nice-sized cache in it besides my "Drive In" cache nearby.

Unfortunately, the area no longer supports anything larger than a teeny-tiny cache and i cannot justify replacing "just a cache" that is a small with something that isn't.... or maybe something larger.

And so.... this is with sadness that i am going to archive this. It's not what i wanted to do, however, i cannot give this park a proper replacement that will not get removed by muggles or maintenance.

Thanks to all those who came to visit Salter and log a find on "Just a Cache in Salter Park". It's appreciated. This area is clear for anyone else that wishes to hide something here in this nice Harper Woods City park. The other cache i have here for the Drive In will remain and was checked today and all is well with that one.,

KacheHuntR is last-to-find on this one.

Happy Caching.

Geocache Description:

Harper Woods was incorporated as a city on February 19, 1951, when the residents of Gratiot Township (est. 1895) voted to incorporate the entire area of the Township of Harper Woods.  A Charter Commission was elected, a Charter prepared and adopted, and a City Council elected.  The City of Harper Woods was "born" on Monday, October 29, 1951, when the Charter took effect and the first City Council was sworn in.

The first settler in the part of Gratiot Township which is now Harper Woods was Casper Salter, who staked a claim in 1859 on a piece of land near what is now Kelly Road, along the western city limits.  This is also the person that Salter Park would later be named after as a dedication to this early resident.

The name of the City was created from its being in a heavily wooded area and from its main thoroughfare, Harper Avenue.  Harper was named for Walter Harper, founder of Harper Hospital in Detroit.

In 1955, the route for the Interstate 94 Expressway Route was approved, and in 1960 the Expressway was completed as far as Vernier.

The property that Salter Park resides upon was once part of the Midwest's first Drive-In Movie Theatre known as "The East Side Drive-In" which also has a Geocache dedicated to it: "(MCH) The East Side Drive-In" (GC33H0K)

The Drive-In Theatre closed in 1977 and would be demolished in 1978.  The city acquired the property and remodeled it into a park and Senior Center.

In 2001, Harper Woods celebrated its 50th anniversary and continues to be a family-oriented community.
