The Small Town with Lots of Heart Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Ranger Nurse: Sorry about having to do this, but with the loss of my parents, I have not been very attentive at geocaching anymore. With that I am archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Worthington, Iowa holds a lot of heart in eastern Iowa. It may be a small community but has a lot of history.

My grandfather a WWI vet, was one of the first to drive a Ford Model T in the community. While my grandparents were driving to church in a car, many others attended by horse and wagon.

The movie "Miles From Home" starring Richard Gere, took place here in 1988 and although it never really scored high in the box office, the house in the movie was my great grandparents. Too bad the house burned down a few years after the movie was made.

St. Paul's Catholic Church was one of the first churches in the area before the other towns had one built. The original mission cross still resides in the nave of the church. Also, St. Paul's is known for its almost life size Way of the Cross.

A lot of vets are buried in St. Paul's cemetery from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm as well as many that did not see war that served. Many of the people in this community served their country and are buried with honors. If you ever have a chance drive through this cemetery on Memorial Day Weekend.

The Milwaukee Road used to have a spur end up in Worthington off the main line outside of Monticello. My mother recalls getting on the post office car and riding to Cedar Rapids relaying to another train to Marshalltown for nursing school. It took her pretty much a whole day to get there.

The cache is a small key box. BYOP!!! I placed a cache here simply because Worthington doesn't have one. The cache is pretty simple to find and I have found a few caches in the same location. This is a high muggle alert especially during the weekends.

I do not mind photos as long as the photos do not reveal any location of the cache.

Have Fun!!!

Congratulations to ssa45 for the FTF!!!
