Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near an area of local interest close to the top of Maldon High Street. It is in a very residential area with shops and houses close by. For this reason I have given it a higher than normal difficulty rating as great stealth will be required to retrieve and replace the cache.

In a medieval description of the town the Ware Pond was originally known as the town ‘Wayer’. A ‘Burth’ is a Saxon fortified place and it is thought that the Ware Pond may have been a remnant of the original Burth defences.

As late as the early twentieth century it was used as a public washing and watering hole for cattle, and the wetting of carriage wheels to prevent their contraction and retain their outer rims. The pond has been restored and has become a seasonal home for wild ducks. Not far from the Ware Pond was a compound for stray cattle and a dung heap known as the midden.

The cache is about the size of a film pot and contains only a log. Please bring your own pen or pencil.

You can’t park at the cache location but there is free parking not far away in some of the side streets, or you can use one of the pay and display car parks in the town. Please do not park in The Courtyard which is close to the cache as there is a sign stating that unauthorised vehicles will be clamped.
