Geocache Description:

(See Related Web Page)

George 'Doc' Cavalliere was the patriarch of one of Scottsdale's oldest continuously run businesses, Cavalliere's Blacksmith Shop in downtown Scottsdale at Brown and 2nd Streets. It has been a family owned business now for over 100 years!

In the early 1900's, during the construction of the Arizona Canal through the Phoenix area, George was the blacksmith on the job, working to repair tools and sharpen picks. When construction of the canal was complete he was allowed to homestead land in what is now downtown Scottsdale. The city father didn't want a 'smelly, dirty, noisy' blacksmith shop on Main Street (where he origianally set up shop)-- but he WAS allowed to build 'outside' of town where it wouldn't bother anyone. So he chose Brown and 2nd St----WAY out of town!! (2 blocks!!)

His shop originally made harnesses and wheels for horse drawn wagons. He shoed horses and there were always horses tied up outside his shop every day. The nearby residents, who were mostly farmers and rancher, were happy to have a blacksmith shop close since the next closest shop was in Tempe, a long way off across the Salt River!!

When the need for heavy farm iron work diminished Cavalliere's moved into more ornamental work and it is still open today at 3805 N. Brown in downtown Scottsdale!

'Doc', as he became known, purchased Reata Pass in the 1950's and used it as a western theme town of sorts. It was origianlly an historic stage stop between Prescott and Phoenix, passangers being able to have a rest and get food and drink! The location has been used in the past for movies and is still a favorite steakhouse! Examples of his iron works are on display all around the property! The family also owns nearby Greasewood Flat Bar.

Cache is located in this new Scottsdale park that is named in honor of George 'Doc' Cavalliere and his contribution to Scottsdale!
