Geocache Description:

This cache is located at an amazing viewpoint on a public hiking trail in the Kerio Valley. I will include additional points for parking and the starting the trail. The trail is very steep and would be difficult for some people. Near the end of the trail is a rocky outcrop with a beautiful, panoramic view of the Kerio Valley. Among these rocks I hid a cache. The cache is a small lock’n’lock container with a log book and a few international coins for the firsts to find. Bring your own pen.

The Kerio Valley lies in a narrow, long strip approximately 80 km wide at its widest point. The Kerio River flows through the valley. This valley lies between the Cherangani Hills and the Tugen Hills. The Elgeyo Escarpment rises more than 1,830 metres (6,000 ft) above the valley. The valley is 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep. It has semi-tropical vegetation on the slopes, while the floor of the valley is covered by dry thorn bush. The towns of Iten and Kabarnet are major towns that sit across the valley from one another. The hiking trail starts on the road that runs through the valley and connects these two towns.

From Iten you will drive halfway down into the valley and then begin to hike back up out of the valley. The total ascent is about 900 feet (274 meters). This is strenuous but worth the time and energy for the amazing views. Along the trail are waterfalls, colobus monkies, lots of birds, local people, and many trees, plants, and flowers. Remember, this is public land so some locals may be hanging around, fetching water, or even grazing cattle. They expect hikers but may become curious if they see activity around a certain spot so be careful when take and hiding the cache.

This is a beautiful and FREE hike in a less visited part of Kenya. Bring water and a picnic lunch with you. The cache is about a two-three hour hike after parking the car. There is a small parking fee at the campsite but paying this ensures your car will be protected while you are on the hike. If you think you need to, you can just contact me for more information on the hike, what to expect, or what you can see.
