This cache is in the Northern Trails zone of the park. This section of trails is the lesser known section of Thacher Park. There are no picnic areas here but plenty of wonderful Trails. The northern section of Thacher is comprised of approximately 800 acres; most of it purchased in 3 separate parcels. The land was first acquired by the Open Space Institute (OSI) and given to Thacher Park to manage via a management agreement. Subsequently, the land was sold to State Parks. These acquisitions started in 1999 and culminated in 2006 with the purchase of an additional 188 scenic acres along the Helderberg escarpment including High Point, one of the highest and most scenic locations on the escarpment. This final acquisition spurred a re-route of the Long Path, taking it closer to the escarpment to allow better views and a more scenic hike. The 150 mile Long Path trail starts near the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey and winds through the Catskills and Schoharie valley, ending just past high point in Thacher Park. The re-route was spearheaded by Fred Schroeder, a founding member of the Friends of Thacher Park and the benefactor of the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center. In 2011, on the 10 year anniversary of the Nature Center, the red trail in the northern zone was renamed the Fred Schroeder Memorial Trail in honor of Fred.
