My Uncle Dick was a great character. My Dad and my Uncle Dick grew up on a farm in Nebraska. During WWII, Uncle Dick served stateside and then he went to school and became a music teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. My sisters and I were happy to have our fun uncle around the Chicago area while we were growing up.
There are certain "Uncle Dick stories" that were so much fun to tell over the years.
There was the time he reported his car stolen to the Chicago police, only to find it where he had parked it a few days later.
Or the time he picked up my sister (in a fancy white suit) from the Drake hotel and as his car turned a corner, the door swung open and she nearly fell out.
Or the time he put his pipe on his car seat while over for a visit and his car caught fire on our driveway.
But the story I will always remember was when I took my Dad and Uncle Dick and the kids for a trip to Springfield and Uncle Dick got "misplaced" at the Lincoln Home Historic site and he spent the afternoon snoozing in the library across the street while we (and the Springfield police) combed the area for Uncle Dick.
Holy Schmoley! (as he liked to say)
