Geocache Description:

Situated at the site of the development of The Waterwheel Heritage Park beside the river in Kawerau, this cache is a multi with just two stages. About 100 m easy walk.

The Waterwheel Heritage Park, when complete, will showcase implements of yesteryear, some in running condition. The Waterwheel Trust, which was founded by Stan Fretwell, is a group of enthusiasts who are working towards this. They have land which has been donated and rezoned and it is in a huge man-made bend in the Tarawera River, opposite the mighty Tasman Pulp and Paper Mills (now Norske Skog and Carter Holt Harvey owned). When the mills were built in 1955 it was felt the river flowed too fast to be used in the industry so a huge horseshoe was cut in which to divert the river. There are about eight acres within this area which is now for development of the Waterwheel Trust. Why waterwheel? Well, Stan Fretwell has built a big replica of the waterwheel which used to be at nearby Braemar Road to grind flour at a mill which saved sending the local produce to Auckland by coastal boats and then bringing back. The large waterwheel is already in place at the park for you to see. It is turned by pumped water.

The following is from the website where you can find out lots more. Just Google "Waterwheel Heritage Park"
Maybe you will even consider becoming a paid member of this worthwhile trust.
* To provide a tourist attraction for visitors to the Eastern Bay of Plenty showcasing the pioneering history of the district
* To protect and preserve the industrial archaeology of New Zealand, in particular that of the region’s agricultural, transport, timber, pulp and paper industries
* To offer to educate and train in industrial skills young and old alike in the Eastern Bay area. Thus both groups will be improved by joint association. This covers a huge spectrum of base skills.

The park will be on 13 acres of lush, attractive land which is being developed into an historic working village with live machinery, transport and domestic equipment. It pays homage to times past, whilst preserving skills for the future.
