Geocache Description:

Due to terrain and tree cover coordinates are +/- 20' with my Garmin 60Csx

Pennsylvania Railroad in Maryland.

The Pennsylvania Railroad in Maryland was incorporated on January 12, 1876, and the first rail was laid in May of 1879. When completed in June of 1879, the line stretched some 6 1/2 miles from Cumberland to the Pennsylvania state line, where it connected with the Bedford & Bridgeport, controlled by the PRR. The first train ran on December 2, 1879. Eventually the railroad provided through passenger connections to Washington and New York. Coal traveled from the Georges Creek region to the Pennsylvania's export dock at South Amboy, NJ.

The Pennsylvania Railroad in Maryland had been built from the Pennsylvania state line to the west side of the Narrows. It was their intent to continue down the north side of the Narrows, along with the C&P and B&O mains, to Cumberland.
The C&P persuaded the PRR to bridge Will's Creek, and continue down the south side of the Narrows, then cross at the C&P's Potomac Wharf Branch at City Junction.

The section of the WM State Line bridge over the former (now abandoned)C&P Mainline and B&O Mainline. The C&P mainline is the grown up crossties between the access road and the two B&O/CSX tracks. (4/82, Don Biggs photo)

This Bridge provided for the PRR to cross at this point the C&P Eckhart Branch, C&P Mainline, B&O Mainline, Wills Creek and US Route 40. In April of 1982 the bridge was scrapped and removed.

The Regular sized cache you seek has been hidden along this forgotten piece of Railroading History. The former rail line and bridges have been taken back by Father Time and Mother Nature, it is now a mere paths in the woods with remnants of its past left behind.

Locating this cache will take you near the Crossing at Wills Creek, Stone walls and Stone Bridge supports will give you and idea of where the PRR crossed over. The tall stone wall structure where it Crossed Wills Creek and Stone structures of where it crossed the C&P and B&O before heading to State Line are still clearly visible.

Due to Heavy Summer Foliage GPS Coordinates are +/- 20’ on my Garmin 60Csx. Cache is hidden across from the Stone Walls of Wills Creek. Just above water line in amongst the summer foliage. Please make sure to re-hide it so Muggles are NOT able to see it.
Many of them frequent here for Summer time fun

Cache stocked with Stash Note, Log sheets, swag. No writing utensil, so BYOP

Congratulations to Par72 for the FTF !!!
