Geocache Description:

An easy cache (but you may need gloves) to commemorate the opening of the Woolfold Viaduct on National Cycle Route 6. There is easy access at several places including Brandlesholme Road, Brandle Avenue, and Darlington Close (all the way to the end of road - there is a fence if you cut off early) off Tottington Road, but please park considerately if you arrive by car. You can also access it by a sneaky and rather dank footpath route from Valley Court.

Tottington Council first came up with the idea of turning the former Holcombe Brook branch railway into a path in 1972. It was a way of providing an attractive off-road route from Greenmount, Tottington and Brandlesholme to Bury town centre. The main problem was bridging the gap remained where the old Woolfold Viaduct was demolished in 1974. A new bridge would be expensive, but in December 2007 Sustrans's Connect2 programme was awarded £50m of lottery money following a competition and TV vote, and Woolfold Gap was one of several projects included. This meant the project could now go ahead. The opening took place on 7 May 2012, with many local people turning out to have their first walk or cycle along the route and over the bridge. One feature next to the bridge is a bench with three sculptures of local people, all of whom had made important contributions in various fields of endeavor. There is David Swithenbank, who officially opened the bridge, a walker, artist and campaigner for access rights; Reginald (Reg) Harris, cyclist, Olympic Medallist and MBE; and Ralph Rooney, who was a well-loved local character, rambler and local historian. The cache is not near the seat but on the other side of the track, further away from the bridge. Beware muggles approaching from all sides. It is a camouflaged butty box container - thank you for replacing where you found it.
