Geocache Description:

Jupiter is located a short walk into the foothills just off a well traveled trail. Easiest access point is the end of Copper. Please replace cache in as inconspicuous spot as possible.

Find out how big our solar system really is as you complete this cache series. In this model the sun is represented by large sculpture of a hand holding a zia symbol at Luz de Amistad Park near the corner of Tramway and Central. This Zia, a symbol for the sun, is about four meters in diameter. The distances of each planet to the sun and the diameter of each planet is to scale relative to the sun.

Jupiter, the fifth planet, is located about 1.2 miles from the sun in this scale model. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and in this model measures 16 inches in diameter. The sun cannot be seen from this location, though the intersection of Tramway and Central where the sun is located can be seen by climbing a nearby hill.

Fun Facts:

Jupiter's most distinctive feature is the great red spot. The spot is a massive storm twice the size of the earth. The great red spot can be seen through a moderate sized earth based telescope. This storm was first observed in 1665 and may be a permanent feature of the planet's atmosphere.

Jupiter is just like this cache filled with gas. Jupiter's outermost cloud layers are made of mostly hydrogen and helium. The composition of Jupiter below the outer few hundred miles of clouds is largely unknown. The planet is thought to contain a rocky core a few times larger than the earth surrounded by a deep sea of hydrogen compressed so greatly that it behaves like a molten metal.

Jupiter may be about as large as a planet can become. Addition of more material to Jupiter would cause the planet to become more dense rather than larger due to the extra matter increasing the gravitational pull of the planet's core.

Congratulations to TheTechCacher for FTF!
