Geocache Description:

“To Honor and Remember Forever”

This memorial is dedicated to members of Emergency Medical Services, Fire Departments, Law Enforcement, and Rescue Squads that serve the Bradley County, Charleston, and Cleveland areas and have given the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties.

This site was dedicated as an “everlasting tribute” to remember these individuals and recognize their service to their community.

There are six names and dates on this memorial, and hopefully there won’t be any more added for a very long time.
Although I wish I could put all the details of each individual’s life on this page, I simply do not have the information. Instead, I will list their names and a brief account of their last moments of service to their community.

Israel L. Smith – Bradley County Sheriff
On March 14, 1922, Bradley County Sheriff Israel Smith traveled to the area of the county known as Owl Hollow in the White Oak Mountains to raid a whiskey still. Sheriff Smith died that day from a gunshot wound. His killers were tracked down and arrested the next day.

In memory of Sheriff Smith and to honor his deeds as one of Bradley County's greatest heroes, State Representative Chris Newton to sponsor legislation in the Tennessee General Assembly naming a section of South Lee Highway in memory of Sheriff Israel Smith.

After adoption in both chambers of the Tennessee General Assembly, appropriate signage was placed along a section of the highway to serve as a reminder of Sheriff Smith's legacy.

Taylor Caywood – Bradley County Deputy Sheriff
Deputy Caywood was killed while returning a prisoner from another state on January 27, 1932.

Bud Cooper Cash – Cleveland Police Department, Patrolman
Officer Cash was killed at the intersection of Inman and Ocoee Street while running emergency traffic, April 21, 1955.

Ken Wright, SR – Bradley County Deputy Sheriff
Deputy Wright was shot and killed on Broomfield Road while attempting to arrest a violator on August 22, 1971. He came to the aid of a Cleveland Police Officer and saved the officer’s life, but lost his own.

David “Al” McCollum – Cleveland-Bradley County Rescue, Lieutenant
LT McCollum was killed while attempting to rescue workers from a well in Meigs County on September 16, 1989. He was overcome by carbon monoxide trapped in the confined space and died during transport to the hospital.

Scott M. Berry – Bradley County Fire Department, Sergeant
Sgt. Berry was en route to a brush fire when the vehicle he was driving left the roadway and rolled, crushing the cab with himself and his brother trapped inside. Sgt. Berry died from injuries sustained in the accident on December 17, 1997.

Two of these individuals are very dear to the Bradley County Fire-Rescue organization that operates just feet away from this monument.
LT David “Al” McCollum and Sgt Scott M Berry were both members of this department at the time of their passing and they will be forever remembered for their sacrifices.

This should be a very easy find. There is abundant parking available near this site, however, please try not to park in the lots closest to the fire department and museum unless you are visiting one of those areas. There are other parking spaces very close by. Also, there may be varying levels of muggles nearby depending on the time of day and events taking place, but chances are they will just want to know what you are doing. This cache has been placed with the permission of the fire department and visitors are welcome to stop by and say hi.
