The Sportsman Pub Strines nr Marple.
On Tuesday 26th June 2012 at 1930 hrs
The venue is served by both bus and rail, although the Station is not close. On the Marple to New Mills Road for those who are coming from work, food is available here ..
The history of the pub is listed on the website www.the-sportsman-pub.co.uk but one piece of local knowledge is not included which possibly explains the origin of the pub’s name. The view over the valley is as scenic as they come but the River Goyt valley holds a little known ‘secret’ in that in winter it is the retreat of the secretive migrant wader and game bird The Woodcock from eastern Europe and Russia. Local shooters have long referred to the valley from Compstall through to Mousley Bottom, New Mills as ‘Woodcock Alley’
