Geocache Description:

Opa and Oma’s Cache - S 33 51.621 E 150 57.306

This cache is fairly easy to access. Please place it back the way it is found and like all caches a reasonable swap for what you take. FTF has their pick. This is a safe cache for TB’s, Geocoins and the like. Oma and Opa may even chat with you if you are noticed, don't be shy. There is no need to go further than 1.5 metres past the letter box. The cache description has a bit of history on the area.

I was originally going to arrange a cache at the nearby bridge on Fairfield Rd going across Prospect Creek where the cycleway goes under the bridge but it does flood and the water level can get very close to the bridge level. So I decided against it when Opa said “you could put it here”. For this cache I have added two historical details. A little on the suburban block where the cache is located and the rest a bit about Prospect creek and the bridge I spoke about.

The suburban block was developed in 1960 and had a typical home built that was prevalent at that time the “Fibro Home”. Considered a “wonder of technology” in those days and these were also a cost effective way for young people to become proud owners of their own home. But even then the banks were making their money in loaning to the many young couples who would build or buy these homes in the middle of nowhere. The attached picture shows the house as it was in 1961. The home was the one of a number of homes in an exhibition and this one had the sales office prior to being sold.

Original house

Opa is there in the photo trimming the grass alongside the single concrete footpath. The road was only dirt then but like a lot of homes they had their little white fence. The home has had many changes since then as you can see. They also had their humble ute another Australian icon, but back then no garage which was to come later.

Now in regard to the nearby bridge that crosses Prospect creek. Way back in the past in the 1960’s and earlier. Nearby Loscoe Street which runs down past this street (Lawrence St) used to travel around the bend (now called Cawarra Pl) to a wooden bridge that spanned Prospect creek to enable travelling to and from Guildford. Trucks and the like used to make the bridge rumble and the noise would reach where this home is located. The current bridge and Fairfield Road section from the stop lights down to the bridge didn’t exist until many years later. The Loscoe Street Bridge was the only way between Fairfield and Guildford in this area.

Prospect creek was also so wide in places that people used to row their boats. The other thing I remember is the neighbour used to take his long fishing pole and go fishing in Prospect creek. You would have to be mad to take anything from that waterway these days.
I attempted to get some historical photos of this to add but found that Fairfield council’s services in this regard are abysmal when using the Internet. So at some stage I may still add a photo if I find any.
