I oldtiden mente man, at alting var bygget op af fire elementer – fire grundstoffer. De fire elementer var vand, ild, jord og luft. Man mente, at hvert element havde sin særlige betydning.
Ild
Vi er næsten afhængige af ilden for at få lys og varme. Derfor er ilden også meget vigtig i de gamle myter. De første guder var ofte solguder eller ildvæsener, der levede inde i solen.
I gamle dage holdt ilden de vilde dyr væk, hvis man skulle overnatte ude. Ilden er også blevet brugt til at udrydde trolddom og ondskab. Men når man ikke har ilden under kontrol, kan den være det mest ødelæggende af de fire elementer. Brande og eksplosioner udsletter alt, hvor de raserer.
Jordens indre består også af ild. Den kommer frem som vulkanudbrud.
Religiøse højtider og ritualer har næsten altid ilden med i ritualet. I kirkerne er der fx altid tændte stearinlys. I den katolske kirke er flammen symbol på sjælen. Derfor tænder katolikkerne lys for de dødes sjæle.
