This is my 2nd cache hide along the Woonasquatucket River. There is a canoe launch here at Donigan Park. If you start here (water level permitting) you can paddle all the way down, under the Providence Place mall, and out through Providence River. Make sure you find my other cache down river at Eagle Square while your at it!
This river played a major role in Rhode Island's progression from pioneer to national leader in the American Industrial Revolution. The Rising Sun Mills were once the largest worsted wool producer in the United States. Established in 1875 by an English immigrant named Charles Fletcher, the 1867 Rising Sun Mill became the first building in Fletcher's yarn factory, Providence Worsted Mill. At its height in 1893 the two mills employed more than 750 people and produced more than 900,000 yards of worsted goods yearly.
There were 5 dams constructed on the Woonasquatucket River, this being the first. A fish ladder was completed at Rising Sun Mill in 2007 and can be viewed from the mill parking lot. Cache is hidden behind a brick size rock just past the hint, near the portage, loaded with swag and a TB.
Enjoy, happy caching!
Congrats to Anonymike7 for another FTF!
