District of North Cowichan

With an average of 2047 hours of sunshine every year and Vancouver Island's summer hotspot, it's understandable that the First Nations named the area "Cowichan", meaning "land warmed by the sun". In 1873, The Corporation of the District of North Cowichan became the fourth municipality in British Columbia. The First Nations continued presence, along with the arrival of British, Europeans, Chinese, Japanese, Sikhs among many others has made North Cowichan a community rich in multiculturism.
