Alex Aitken

Alex Aitken Elementary and Aitken Rd were named in honour of Alexander Chalmers Aitken born in 1868, was a Scottish fellow who came to British Columbia by chance in the 1880's. Originally hoping to sail to Victoria, Australia but finding there was no room left on ships bound for Australia, the ticket agent suggested Victoria, British Columbia instead. Alex worked herding sheep in the Somenos Lake area for a number of years for the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Sir Anthony Musgrave and eventually purchased 100 acres from the Musgrave family, many many years later, the public school that was built in the area was named after him.. He eventually moved to the Maple Bay area with the rest of his family that arrived from Scotland where he lived out the rest of his life.
