Old Auction Market
I have really struggled to find any historical information about this auction ring although I do know it is over 100 years old. I was born in 1983 so I can remember this auction house being in use. Before Braidfute retail park (named after the wife of William Wallace) was built there was a number of buildings here used by the local farmers. The market has now been moved to the outskirts of Lanark next to the old barracks.

The company that built the shopping centre had said they would restore the action ring as part of the deal of being able to building the shopping complex. It has now been 8 years and nothing has been done. The building is for sale although not many potential buyers have expressed an interest.

Cartland Bridge Toll Gates
The gates were created by the famous architect Thomas Telfer to be part of the Cartland Bridge he designed and built in the early 19th century. They were moved here and incorporated into the entrance to the old market. The gates date from 1820 and are reputed to be the oldest surviving toll gates in Scotland. These gates were removed here from the bridge following the abolition of the turnpike trust. There used to be 2 sets of gates in Lanark, the current Cartland Toll gates and the gates to Lanark Racecourse. Both were moved to Hyndford Road in 1880's. The gates for Lanark Racecourse has disappeared completely, probably sold for scrap decades ago at a time when their historic value was unrecognised.

Congratulations to 6669 for being the FTF.
