Geocache Description:

I stumbled across this location some time ago and have become fascinated with the history that you will find on this journey.

Omer was founded in 1820 when a family traveling from Virginia on the indian trail was forced to stop here because of severe weather and while suffering from some sort of plague. The landowner, Thomas Dillard offered them shelter in his home and they have been here ever since.

While here, you will find one of the oldest but least known war memorials in the state. It is also likely that you will come across a few of the soldiers from the families that have been here of decades. You may also discover some mysteries as well. For example, there are 44 of something here, most concentrated in one area, and no one knows exactly why. Maybe you'll be inspired to further your own search beyond the cache and share your findings here.

One other piece of local lore that was passed on to me by a member of the Barrow County historical society relates to an failed crime. Apparently, the wife of the President of People's Bank was kidnapped in the 1950's. She was held on this site but managed to escape on her own, none the worse for wear.

If you see a red truck when you arrive, don't be shy. Than's just Buddy. He knows all about the strange people with electronic devices that will show up from time to time.

(Note: If you see some small American flags scattered around the site know that these were placed by me on Memorial Day 2012. ) NOTE: Sadly, the church at this location was recently vandalized. They have posted no trespassing signs at the easy way in but the cache is not in the cemetery itself but is rather outside of it on the perimeter. It can be bushwhacked without entering the property for those fearful of the appearance of trespassing.
