Geocache Description:

Placed at a well-preserved palm frond fossil along the loop trail at the Canyon Lake Community Forest.

The Canyon Lake Community Forest was acquired in 1993 for $3.7 million. Encompassing 2,300 acres, this preserve features the large Canyon Lake, stands of old growth forest 1000 years old , large rockslides with many fossils such a this one, and miles of excellent hiking trails.

This cache used to be only .1 mi  from the trailhead, but unfortunately the access road was closed in 2009 due to washouts for an indefinite period of time. For now, 8 miles RT of walking (or biking) will be required to reach the trailhead.

The trailhead can be reached by driving up the road towards "Racehorse Falls Landslaide", but instead taking a right at (N 48° 52.364 W 122° 07.919). Continue along this road through a clearcut, passing Slide Mountain, until you get to a gate (N 48° 51.609 W 122° 08.008). From here walk or bike along the road, joining Canyon Lake Road at (N 48° 51.470 W 122° 07.408). All the junctions on the way are singed, so navigation should be easy. After 4mi, reach the entrance to the Community Forest. Unfortunately, no dogs or bicycles are allowed within the preserve, so if you rode your bike in, just leave it for the return. Just beyond the entrance is the old trailhead. Two trails start here (they form a two mile lake loop), so take the northern (left) one and follow it a short distance to the cache site. Form here, I highly recommend completing the 2mi lake loop, or if you're very ambitious, going up through the old growth forest to the spectacular ridge-top viewpoint (7.5 miles RT from the old trailhead).

Have fun, and Happy Hunting!
