Geocache Description:

Part of the Icelandic Filming Location Geotrail. This cache is hidden at one of the filming locations of Flags of Our Fathers from 2006.

Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima are two movies directed by Clint Eastwood that were filmed back to back. Flags of Our Fathers tells the story of Hayes, Gagnon, and Bradley who are the 3 surviving soldiers of the 5 that raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima. The picture that was taken of the flag raising became a symbol of hope back home and the three were sent on tour to rais money for the war.

Letters from Iwo Jima tells an alternative story from the Japanese perspective.

Flags of Our Fathers was largely filmed at Sandvík in Reykjanesskagi. The black beach is very similar to the beach at Iwo Jima.

On the way to Sandvík you will drive along the Reykjanes peninsula where the planets from the solar system have been placed according to scale and distance from the sun. They are placed from Reykjanesviti light house and the Bridge between two continents. These planet spheres were placed when the museum Power Plant Earth was opened in 2006. At that museum you get to know all about the Big Bang Theory, the creation of the universe and our solar system.

If you park at the main road, it's about 1.4 kilometers walk to the cache. There is a road that gets you 1.0 kilometers closer, but I didn't trust my car down that road in the fear of a rock getting under the car and damaging it. Drive the road at your own risk. I did notice however that the first 200 meters were the worst.

The cache is hidden on top of a hill north from the black beach.
