Le origini del borgo murato di Filetto sono da ricondurre alla difesa bizantina contro i Longobardi, che nei secoli VI e VII impegnò la Lunigiana. Il sistema difensivo, il “limes”, era basato sui castra di Filetto e di Filattiera. Lo stesso toponimo di Filetto, come quello di Filattiera, sembra derivare dal termine greco "filakterion", luogo fortificato. Parte del feudo di Malgrate dal 1351, nel 1641 fu venduto da Cesare II alla Reale camera di Milano e quindi agli Ariberti di Cremona. Nel borgo è visibile l'impianto originario, oggi la piazza di Sopra, strutturato in forma quadrilatera e difeso da quattro torri cilindriche, di cui una ancora perfettamente individuabile. Il primo nucleo, venute meno le funzioni militari, venne adattato a residenza fortificata ed in seguito esteso, con ripetuti interventi fino al XVII secolo. Al borgo si accede da due porte monumentali, di cui la porta Sud del XVI secolo, rifatta nel 1700 con bugnato a punta di diamante. Sulla piazza della chiesa dedicata ai Santi Filippo e Giacomo si trova il Palazzo dei Marchesi Ariberti, massiccio edificio seicentesco unito al borgo e alla chiesa da due eleganti passaggi aerei di collegamento, e sul lato opposto della piazza il Convento dei Frati Ospitalieri, vasto complesso del XVII secolo, con un bel chiostro interno in parte distrutto e rimaneggiato. Nelle vicinanze del borgo si trova l'oratorio di San Genesio del XVI secolo, nella misteriosa selva di Filetto, nella quale sembra si svolgessero feste e incontri tribali già nella preistoria e dove sono state rinvenute numerose statue stele. A Filetto si svolge ogni agosto il Mercato Medioevale. Per l’occasione, il borgo cambia faccia e torna indietro nel tempo con addobbi medievali, cartomanti, giocolieri, menestrelli, saltimbanco e oggetti dell'artigianato locale in ferro, legno, pietra e marmo. The origins of the walled village of Filetto can be attributed to the Byzantine defense against the Lombards, who in the sixth and seventh centuries engaged the Lunigiana. The defensive system, the "limes", was based on the Filetto and Filattiera castrates. The same name of the thread, such as Filattiera, seems to derive from the greek word "filakterion" fortified place. Part of the estate of Malgrate from 1351, was sold in 1641 by Caesar II at the Royal chamber and then to Milan Ariberti of Cremona.
In the village has seen the original plant, now the Piazza di Sopra, defended and structured quadrilateral shape with four round towers, one of which is still perfectly recognizable. The first core military functions ceased to exist, was adapted to house fortified and later extended, with repeated interventions until the seventeenth century.
The village can be accessed by two monumental gates, of which the southern gate of the sixteenth century, rebuilt in 1700 with ashlar diamond. On the front of the church dedicated to Saints Philip and James is the Palace of the Marquis Ariberti massive seventeenth-century building in the village and joined the church by two elegant passages connecting air, and on the opposite side of the square, the Convent of the Hospitallers, a vast complex of seventeenth century, with a beautiful cloister partly destroyed and rebuilt.
Near the village is the oratory of St. Genesius of the sixteenth century, in the mysterious forest of thread, which seems to tribal parties and meetings were held in prehistoric times and where they were found numerous stone statues.
A fillet is held every August, the Medieval Market. For the occasion, the town changed the face and back in time with medieval decorations, fortune tellers, jugglers, minstrels, acrobats, and local crafts in iron, wood, stone and marble.
