Geocache Description:

Access to the valley is only possible using 4x4 vehicle or an Icelandic specially upgraded bus! Or, as we did, you can walk it.:-)

Mount Valahnúkur
Mount Valahnúkur

Mount Valahnúkur is in the Þórsmörk natural reserve. It is a volcanic mountain which was formed during the last ice age. It may have been formed entirely under water. The evidence supporting this theory is the pillow lava rocks which Mount Walahnúkur is made of. Pillow lava is created by extrusion of the lava under water.

The top of the hill is in 458 metres above the sea level and offers magnificent 360° scenic view of Þórsmörk. You can admire the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, river Króssá which is floating below it. At the other side you can see river Markarfjót and behind it stands a range of massive mountains with the Tindfjallajökull glacier in the distance.

Signpost on the top with an amazing view in the background

View from the top

The valley is enclosed with mountains on three sides (south, east and north). The view to the west shows the confluence of the two rivers. On a bright day you can see the sea in the distance as well!

The hike to the top is challenging, but the great majority of people shouldn’t have a problem doing so. At the top you will be thoroughly rewarded with the view, it is definitely worth it!

The cache itself is on the north-west side from the top, just 20 metres from the signpost.

Enjoy the walk and the view!
