Geocache Description:

English:

During the late Roman period, el Puerto de Mazarrón was a town dedicated mainly to fishing and fish salting, as well as other related industries (weaving, pottery, saltworks). It became one of the three most important economic sites on the Mediterranean coast together with Águilas and Cartagena.

The Roman factory (a museum nowadays) was the centre around which life developed during IV-V centuries B.C. The structures conserved in the room are part of a great industrial complex dedicated to the process of cleaning, cutting and salting fish to produce salted fish and fish sauces, specially “garum”. The entrance is free (by now) and visiting it is worth it since everything in this little and curious place is well presented and explained (unfortunately only in Spanish).
