Geocache Description:

La Chapelle Notre-dame de Grattemoine
Une drive-in le long de la route Napoléon, qui relie DIGNE à la côte d'azur..
A drive-in, along the "route Napoleon", between city of DIGNE and Cote d'azur.

le nom étrange de cette chapelle romane est dû à la déformation progressive du latin gravida ( degré, gradin ) et caminus ( chemin ) qui fait allusion à la situation de l'édifice bâti sur le seul point élevé de la plaine, au pied de laquelle passait une antique voie de communication, peut-être une annexe de la voie romaine "vintin" reliant vence à castellanne.
Une borne militaire dont la base a servi de bénitier a été trouvée à proximité.
De l'église à la chapelle
les parties les plus anciennes conservées appartiennent à une église du début de XIIème siècle, qui avait une nef charpentée longue de 17 mètres , prolongée d'une abside semi-circulaire, flanquée au sud d'une petite chapelle baptismale.
A la fin du XIIIème siècle et dans la première moitié du XIVème siècle, la nef est pourvue d'une voûte et divisée en quatre travées.
la poussée de la voûte entraine la mise en place d'un premier contrefort au niveau du pilastre, à l'extérieur au nord.
Peu après d'autres désordres conduisent a reparementer l'abside et le mur nord.
Par la suite, les problèmes persistant, il faut placer un deuxième contrefort.
Après le moyen age, la nef est réduite à la première travée en construisant un nouveau mur de façade dans lequel on réemploie une partie de l'encadrement de porte de l'édifice antérieur.

the strange name - Grattemoine- ( literaly scrape monk ) of this Roman chapel is due to the progressive distortion of the Latin gravida (degree, step) and caminus (path) that makes allusion to the situation of the building , built on the highest part of the plain, near an ancient way of communication, an annex of the roman way "vintin" joining cities of vence to castellanne.
A military boundary-mark whose basis acted as stoup has been found close by.
From the church to the chapel
the kept oldest parts belong to a church of the beginning of XIIème century, that had a long vessel of 17 meters and framed, prolonged of a semicircular apse, flanked to the south of a small baptismal chapel.
At the end the XIIIème century and in the first half of the XIVème century, the vessel is provided of an arch and is divided in four bays.
the thrust of the arch entails the setting up of a first buttress to the level of the pilaster, outside to the north.
Shortly after other messes drive has reparementer the apse and the north wall.
Thereafter, the problems persisting, it is necessary to place a second buttress.
After the aged means, the nave is reduced to the first bay while constructing a new wall of facade in which one re-uses a part of the framing of door of the previous building....
