You are more likely to hear than see me. I make a soft "coos" and can generally be found from deep within a cattail marsh. I am the smallest species of heron in North America. I’m rather fond of frog legs, although the rest of the frog isn’t bad either. I also eat small fishes, salamanders, tadpoles, leeches, slugs, crayfishes, dragonflies, and shrews and mice when I get the chance. I have a secretive nature and appreciate a quiet marsh. Habitat loss is a concern to me due to the drainage of wetland for development and farmland.
