Wenn ihr schon immer wissen wolltet, wohin die Wiener Fiakerpferde abends zurückkehren, wäre es an der Zeit, diesem Cache auf einer kleinen Tour durch Simmering einen Besuch abzustatten. Nicht weit entfernt ist der Eingang zum alten jüdischen Teil des Zentralfriedhofs, der bei schönem Wetter ebensfalls einen Spaziergang wert ist.

Fiaker in Wien

Ende des 17. Jhdts. fuhren in Wien die ersten "Lohnkutschen", auch wenn weitaus weniger komfortabel, als wie sie heute kennen. Bereits 30 Jahre früher befand sich in der Pariser Rue de Fiacre (daher auch der Name) der erste Stand für Fiaker, betrieben von einem französischen Pferdehändler. 1785 bekamen die Kutscher die erste Bewilligung für zwei offizielle Standplätze, am Michaelerplatz und am Graben. Bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war dies ein durchaus angesehener und wichtiger Beruf. Danach begannen die ersten Automobile die Pferde von der Straße zu verdrängen; nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gab es nurmehr wenige Pferde, andere Verkehrsmittel, die preiswerter waren, wurden den Kutschen vorgezogen.

Heute sind Fiakerkutschen vor allem in der Wiener Innenstadt nur mehr als Touristenattraktion anzutreffen. Seit 1984 dürfen auch Frauen als Kutscher arbeiten.

If you ever wanted to know, where viennese Fiaker-horses rest over the night, it's about time to visit this cache during a short trip through Simmering. Quite near you can also find the entrance to the old jewish part of the Zentralfriedhof, which is worth a walk when the weather is fine.

Fiaker in Vienna

At the end of the 17th century the first "Lohnkutschen" (horse and carriage) started driving through Vienna, but still not as comfortable then the coaches nowadays. Even 30 years before the first Fiaker-station was settled in the Rue de Fiacre (therefore the name) in Paris, owned by a french horsedealer. In 1785 the coach drivers got their first licence for their offical station at the Michaelerplatz an at the Graben. Until the beginning of the 20th century coach driver has been a well respected and important job. The the cars started to drive out the horses from the streets (literaly). After the Second World War only a few horses were left, other cheaper transport possiblities took over.

Nowadays the Fiaker-coaches are mostly limited to the City-Center as a touristic attraction. Since 1984 women are also allowed to perform as coachdrivers.
